London’s Proms: The ‘everyman’ Concert Season

The summer’s most famous and accessible classical music concert season is underway. Will you be there?

If so, it might suit you to consider London serviced accommodation for your stay. Even if it’s as brief as a single-night stay, you will find that accommodation costs in London are a lot friendlier—and space a lot more generous—than a similar standard in hotels, especially for families and small groups.

So which Proms could you see in 2010, supposing you had unlimited availability?

The Proms are unlike any other classical concerts: £5 cash tickets are sold starting just two and a half hours before the start of each performance, which allows you to see world-class classical music in the splendid Albert Hall, but with an informal atmosphere and for low prices under £10. The only drawbacks to consider is that it’s standing room only, and there might be queues! But how British, if you’re willing to enter the spirit of things.

There are 75 concerts to choose from, all themed somehow, usually featuring new works alongside time-honoured pieces. There’s a Mahler extravaganza: his large-scale symphonies and songs are performed in Proms 1, 18, 24, 26, 34, 48 and 62. All five Beethoven piano concertos will be performed (Proms 6, 16, 27 and 69). There’s a pair of Proms (10 & 11) featuring score choices from Doctor Who. There’s even young British jazzer Jamie Cullum with the Heritage Orchestra (Prom 55).

Or there’s always the famous Last Night. This is an unforgettable, riotous and sentimental concert night that simultaneously celebrates the “Britishness” of the event whilst showcasing leading international musicians in a deliberate blend of new and traditional classics. The way to get tickets is to attend five other Prom concerts first.

Where should you stay for a good Proms experience?

Basing yourself at a serviced flat in London gives you a high standard of accommodation in London and will be your home-from-home, letting you have comfort and space, while keeping in the ‘everyman’ spirit of the Proms by getting a favourable offer at the same time.

I hope you’ll enjoy an unforgettable Proms season.
