If you do not want to pay for piano lessons, and not everyone does, there are other options available to learn how to play the piano. You can learn the basics of piano playing from books and videos as well. There is plenty of online inspiration for feeding your desire to learn the piano. It is just knowing where and how to get started.

Where do you turn to first to learn piano playing? I would pay a visit to the library and pick up a book or two on piano notes or piano scales, and see how well you cope with learning them. Learning from books is not easy for everyone, and you do not need to be put off if you find it hard going, because there are instructional videos which show you the information you need to know. Videos lessons are easier and clearer to follow for some people.

If your goal in wanting to learn the piano is just being able to play some easy piano songs, then learning by yourself is the way to go. If you want to be a concert pianist, I would have to think again, and advise you to hire a teacher.

Rather than playing the piano just for your own enjoyment, you might decide to join a band, together with other musicians. If you do, then you are in good company. Many accomplished keyboard players have taught themselves the scales and chords by ear. By learning to play the piano in the company of musicians, playing different instruments, you will find you tend to be more in touch with the flow of the music.

Bear in mind this is just one method of learning to play the piano and it might not suit your learning style. Whatever method you choose, it is comforting to know that if you intend becoming a self taught piano player, you know it can be done, because others have done it before you.
