Play The Piano By Ear: 5 Basics You Need To Almost Immediately Start Playing Your Favorite Songs

People play piano by ear every day and they don’t necessarily know how to read music.

In fact many professionals can’t read music and play strictly by ear. When you ask them how they do it, they’ll tell you they don’t know. The reason they don’t know is because the skill has become second nature. But just like all skills, playing the piano by ear can be learned. And you can learn this skill too.

By learning to play by ear, you can learn how to play your favorite songs faster than going through months of traditional piano lessons.

There are 5 basics you need to have or know before you begin. If you have these down, you’ll be on your way to playing the piano by ear.

1. Desire to Learn A Song. You have to have an interest in playing and an interest in learning how to play your song by ear. Your desire will motivate you to practice. If you are not inspired, you will not succeed.

2. Tell the Difference Between Notes. You will be figuring out which note to play, so you have to be able to tell if a note is higher in pitch or lower. A higher note moves right (up) on the keyboard. A lower note moves left (down) on the keyboard.

3. Carry a Tune. You have to be able to repeat a note exactly as you hear it. This skill is important when learning how to play by ear because it will help you figure out which note to play. Sing a note and find it on the keyboard. Then do the reverse, play a note and sing it. Can you match the pitch? You don’t have to be a great singer. You just have to be in tune on the right note.

4. Know the Notes on The Keyboard. There are only 12 notes in music. They are A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. These notes are repeated on the piano keyboard in a pattern of 12 keys, made up of 7 white keys and 5 black keys. This pattern repeats, so you can think of the keyboard in sections of 12 keys. Each section is an octave. Once you know the pattern and the notes, you can find a note in any octave.

5. Persistence in Practice. Although you can learn to play by ear faster than traditional methods, you still need to practice. The more you practice, the better you’ll be…and the faster you’ll be playing your favorite song.

Playing piano by ear is not impossible as long as you have these 5 basics. They are the stepping stones to getting started.
