Beginner Piano Practice – 3 Great Tips to Make Piano Practice Fun

Playing the piano is a fantastic hobby. You are creating music yourself, rather than listening to a CD. Piano practice can either be a chore or an activity that you really look forward to. Here are 3 great tips to make piano practice fun!

Tip 1 – Doodle on the piano before you start playing a piece! Just play some simple finger patterns to get yourself warmed up. Try playing at different speeds and to different rhythms.

Play in different parts of the piano to get used to high and low sounds. Play some notes together – do they sound harmonious? What works? What doesn’t? Experiment, have fun, be creative!

Tip 2 – Practice with a specific goal in mind. If you are practising the rhythm, clap or tap the rhythm through first. Make up words that fit the rhythm – it could be beginning of a new song writing career!

If you are practising the melody, try singing it through first. Get used to the rise and fall of the melody. By singing it, you will be able to hear the sound in your head before you play the notes on the piano.

Tip 3 – Place 5 buttons on the top of the piano next to a pot. Every time you make a mistake, put a button in the pot. Then limit yourself to 4 buttons, then 3.

This is a fun piano exercise, focusing the mind on accuracy and turning it into a game.

Another alternative is to turn it into a “platform game”. If you make a mistake you lose a life and have to return to the beginning of the piece!
