The Best Fake Book Ever: For Keyboard, Vocal, Guitar, and All “C” Instruments

I was VERY disappointed. I was searching for songs in the KEY OF C and when I found this was for “C” instruments I thought it was like for a harmonica that is tuned in C. That’s not ANYWHERE in the literature on this book … so if you are looking for songs in the Key of C … forget this one. Damned expensive and for me, and very disappointing.

Do not assume that there are no sharps and flats in this book just because it advertises for “C” instruments. Even though there are over 1000 songs in the book, unless you are very well versed in music over the past 70 years, be prepared to only relate to about 10 to 15 percent of the songs. If you are well-versed in left-hand chords, including songs with three sharps and five flats, and if you are an historian of 20th centrury music, then this is definitely the book for you. If you are primarily a 1 sharp / 1 flat pianist with only a background in music of the past 30 years, be prepared to be limited to about 10% of the songs in the book. I am not a great pianist, so I struggle with many of the songs. It also helps to be very proficient with beat and timing so that you can work on songs with which you are not familiar. The price of the book is very reasonable, just reduce your expectations to be able to play 1000 songs, unless you are a good musician.

I’m just getting started playing the trumpet again after a 48 yr. break. I bought this book because of the large number of songs and being written in b flat. True there are a lot of songs that are newer and not so many standard “oldies”. However, that’s not my main concern. A lot of songs just don’t sound that good on the trumpet and some are written with notes so low that they sound terrible. There are some great trumpet pieces such as “When Sunny Gets Blue”, “Misty”, etc., but you have to wade through a lot of others to get to the good ones. I have some other Leonard fake books for the keyboard and they are just fine but look for some other music for the trumpet.

Music is excellent, tho some is rather simplified. Paper is crappy but there is plenty of great music from Niel Diamond to the Beetles.

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my wife who plays piano. She is not at all pleased, indicating the writing of lyrics and notes are too small. What IS great about the book is the huge variety of great “playable/singable” songs….as advertised.
Did I get the wrong book?
